 Hyperextension in rift systems results in extremely thinned continental crust and ultimately in exhumed mantle (e.g. Peron-Pinvidic and Manatschal, 2009). Creation of accommodation-space and sedimentation in these systems are mainly controlled by the development of extensional detachment faults resulting in compartmentalized supra-detachment basins showing a complex stratigraphic architecture with spatially variable and diachronously changing sedimentary records (e. g., Bay of Biscay-Pyrenees realm; Masini et al., 2014). Hyperextension in rift systems results in extremely thinned continental crust and ultimately in exhumed mantle (e.g. Peron-Pinvidic and Manatschal, 2009).
